Western Innovation Initiative

As the innovation limits are continually being pushed, the Canadian government continues to support the Western Innovation Initiative (WINN).  WINN provides interest-free repayable contributions (covers up to 50% of capital equipment and other direct expenditures) for SMEs located in Western Canada that are looking to bring their developed technologies, that are in the later stages of R&D, into the market place. Eligible SMEs should stay tuned for the announcement of the third round of funding, opening in 2015 (which will be officially communicated at a later date).

Since WINN is only two years into its five-year, $100 million initiative, there is still plenty of opportunity for projects to secure this funding. Twenty percent of the funding will be directed towards small projects (applying for $500,000 or less) while the remaining eighty percent will be directed towards large projects (applying for $500,000 and up).

Is your project in line with the objectives of the program?

  • Commercialize innovative technology-based products, processes and services;
  • Stimulate greater private sector investments in commercialization activities;
  • Increase the number of jobs for highly qualified personnel in Western Canada; and
  • Assist in industry growth.
